Upon retirement from a career at the United Nations, Edna Adan used her own funds and rallied supporters to build a Maternity Hospital in her war-ravaged home country of Somaliland.
Edna Adan University Hospital works to improve the health of Somalilanders by training midwives, nurses and pharmacists; and fights the practice of Female Genital Mutilation.
The Edna Hospital concentrated initially on the mission of training midwives to reduce the high rate of maternal and infant mortality, and that of fighting the practice of Female Genital Mutilation. Later on, a highly successful nurse training program was implemented. Qualified pharmacists were found to be lacking so, to fill that need, another training program was developed. More recently, operating theatres were built in an extension to the hospital.
This Fundraiser is to raise money for two new infant incubators!! Please read Edna's message: "New preemie today. No incubator available so keeping her temperature up the best we can with water bottles and gloves filled with warm water. The Edna Adan Hospital received the first premature baby incubator in 2002 as a donation from the Dutch Ambassador who visited our hospital. That incubator served us for several years and then developed electrical problems due to frequent power surges. We then received two more from Direct Relief www.facebook.com/directrelief and only one is now working. We desperately need a simple premature baby incubators so that we may place each preemie in his/her incubator so that we could control each baby's individual needs for oxygen, temperature and care. We are fully aware that making premature babies share an incubator is dangerous but have no other option when we have become the only hope for the survival of these small babies in Hargeisa. Heaven help us if our single incubator also develops electrical problems."
