THE STORY:

Ariel Yardeni wrote -

Do you think education is a fundamental human right? Do you believe health and English education can help students around the world imagine a brighter future?

EduAmistad Ecuador is the first and only NGO in Ecuador to focus on making health education widespread throughout schools. Help us fund a team of volunteers to bring innovative health and English education to Guayaquil, Ecuador!

Who We Are

EduAmistad Ecuador, Inc. is a registered nonprofit in New York State that specializes in providing no-cost health and English education to underprivileged students in and around Guayaquil, Ecuador. During this past summer – summer 2015 – we (Nick O'Connor and Ariel Yardeni) have been working alongside government officials, community leaders, and local university students to pilot our program which uses progressive education techniques to engage the students in an interactive learning experience.

In the upcoming winter, we are bringing ten to sixteen students (depending on fundraising) to Ecuador with us to be our first group of volunteer health and English educators. At EduAmistad Ecuador, we are really passionate about our work in education because we see a real need in the communities we work in for creative and engaging solutions. Speaking to our health classes, Ecuador has the second highest rate of teenage pregnancy in all of South America (76 out of every 1000 high school age girls will give birth), and many students drop out due to drug addiction and sales. Many of the students we will work with to teach English have returned to school and are on accelerated tracks to complete their education and learn a trade. We will work at community centers that serve as safe spaces for learning and rebuilding lives.

What We Need

This isn't cheap. Clearly. Hence the fundraising. We need to support volunteer and staff member housing, flights, transportation, and other living costs, and we want to offset these prices as much as possible so that nobody is prevented from volunteering due to cost. As a start-up NGO, we also need funds for a lawyer and accountant, and $400 to pay for our 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status so that when people donate in the future they can get money back from their taxes.
