BENEFITING: Friends of Volunteers Initiative Nepal
ORGANIZER: Friends of Volunteers Initiative Nepal
EVENT DATE: Dec 31, 2012
Join me in sponsoring Deepika's education
(and you can win a free week's stay in Maui – see Contest details below)
This is Deepika Rajbansi, She’s 12 and wants to be a teacher. According to her own teachers she’s bright, very talented and dedicated to her studies. However, her parents, are not able to pay for her schooling.
Deepika is one of many deserving girls from the village of Jitpur, Nepal. Funding opportunities for girls and women in Nepal can be one of the most powerful ways to address the drastic social and economic inequalities facing Nepal, one of the poorest nations in the world.
How can I help?
There are 3 easy ways you can get involved and make a big impact this holiday season (and in the process get automatically entered to win a free week’s stay at Tree Tops Cottage on Maui!)
· Donate to Deepika’s Team: Hit the orange ‘DONATE’ button on the right and help me send Deepika to school this year!
· Join Deepika’s Team: Help me fundraise (even if you don’t have money) by spreading the word.
· Start your own team for one of these girls still in need of sponsorship to continue their education..
Where does my money go?
For only $230 (equivalent to one Starbucks Latte a week for a year)Deepika can receive a year’s schooling, including tuition, books, stationary, uniforms and medical supplies.
· admission fees
· examination fees
· monthly tuition fees
· two sets of uniforms (shirt, pant, sweater, tie, belt, shoes, bag etc)
· stationery and books
· child club support
· support for community development activities
· administrative charge (including correspondence; follow up and monitoring of the sponsored child).
Girls in particular in Nepal are often deprived of a full education, due to gender discrimination.
Without help, Deepika could become one of the 57% of illiterate women in the country of Nepal. She might have to drop out of school or miss classes. She will likely remain stuck in the cycle of poverty, with little or no opportunity for holding any job, but especially as a teacher.
“What we are learning around the world is that if women are healthy and educated, their families will flourish. If women are free from violence, their families will flourish. If women have a chance to work and earn as full and equal partners in society, their families will flourish. And when families flourish, communities and nations do as well.”
--Secretary of State and former First Lady
