BENEFITING: ONE LOVE LEARNING FOUNDATION

EVENT DATE: Jun 05, 2014

THE STORY:

A NEW WORLD IN THE MAKING, THROUGH ONE LOVE

WHAT WE DO

The children served by our foundation grow up in poverty, in Jamaica and South Africa, with no role models and no prospects.  The One Love Learning Foundation seeks to open up a whole new world to these children, feeding them in body, mind and soul through three types of programs:

  • Organic farming
  • Music programs
  • Cultural exchange

Our organic food garden established at Cavalleria Primary School in Cape Town, South Africa now feeds 400 children and numeracy rates have increased 40% thanks to this improved nutrition!  Our African drumming and marimba music group has won first prize at consecutive inter-school eisteddfods.

We are now seeking to establish similarly impactful projects in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

OUR NEW PROJECT

Agricultural Education-to-Employment

There is a real need in Jamaica for organic produce.  We plan to start the first organic growing facility, built by our students, to plant and harvest organic seeds.

Our ultimate goal is to teach children sustainability and self-sufficiency.  Through making farming fun and meaningful in a larger national context, we aim to take away the stigma of farming as slave labor.

Around 7 acres of land is to be leased for a nominal fee of $1/year from Hammerstein Highland House (www.highlandhousejamaica.com).  We are currently enrolling students in training programs for organic farming, technology, and music courses conducted by contract teachers.  These interns will become project managers and entrepreneurs in their communities.

Our vision includes:

  • Organic composting stations
  • Organic pest control
  • Supplying neighboring school feeding programs
  • Sales of excess produce
  • Proceeds will further develop the learning center and fund scholarships

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Our budget for developing this project in Montego Bay, Jamaica includes:

A fully-equipped greenhouse - $ 17,500

An irrigation system - $  6,500

Solar power supply and generator - $  3,500

Seeds and hydroponic systems - $  2,500

Shipping and import taxes - $ 12,000

TOTAL - $  42,000

“EACH ONE, TEACH ONE!”

We are looking to open up the world to the children within the One Love Learning Foundation.  By uplifting and educating children, we are empowering them to see beyond their immediate circumstances, to dream big dreams and to grow up to achieve them.

They will go to become their communities’ teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs, and engineers, and the leaders that these communities— and the whole world— so desperately need.

By supporting this work, you can join us in opening the door to the dreams and ambitions of these children, creating a better tomorrow for our global village.
