The times they are a changin'. In the 1990s only a handful of institutions of high education accepted students with intellectual disabilities. Mainstream colleges and universities throughout the US are now enrolling thousands of students with intellectual disabilities. There even some colleges fully devoted to providing higher education to adults with intellectual disabilities. Shepherds College in Union Grove, Wisconsin is one school leading this charge. In 2008, Shepherds College burst on the scene providing quality higher level education exclusively to adults with intellectual disabilities. Check them out at: www.shepherdscollege.edu/
Our son, Evan, had a chance to visit Shepherds College last year and immediately fell in love with it. Nineteen years ago, when Evan was born and diagnosed with Down Syndrome, we never imagined that we'd be making college visits with him someday. It was a dream that just didn't seem to be in the reach of someone like Evan. But, here we are eighteen years later preparing to send our son off to college. He is hoping to enrol in the 2015-16 academic year at Shepherds and we want to make that happen for him. So, we launched the “Educating Evan” campaign to raise the funds he’ll need for tuition, room and board, and books. More than simply raising money, we’re hoping to raise a community of people to cheer Evan on as he pursues his dream of obtaining a college degree. By making a donation of any amount your can play your part in Educating Evan!
Thanks for taking the time to read this much.
