Education for Nomads

Building the resilience of pastoralist communities Climate change is compromising the already fragile existence of 75,000 pastoralists living in the Shinile district of the Somali region of Ethiopia. In the face of Ethiopia's worst drought in 60 years, their livelihoods and way of life are in peril. Insufficient rainfall and desertification are wreaking havoc on planting and livestock production, driving food insecurity, and temporary and long-term displacement. Diminished water supplies are hard for pastoralists to access. Grazing lands have been compromised. Herds are dying. And conflict over scarce resources is increasing. What is more, as a result of the drought, 24 percent of school-aged children have no access to education due to school closures. Nibbuti is implementing a three-year program that will help Somali households in drought-affected areas to overcome recent and future environmental shocks. We will offer accelerated learning programs for children who have had never attended school to allow them catch up with their peers. We will also provide the female heads of targeted households with literacy, numeracy and skills/business training, as well as a revolving fund for small to medium-sized enterprises, to ensure entrepreneurial moms can support their children's education with income-generating activities moving forward.
