EVENT DATE: Oct 01, 2013
We are laying the groundwork for today's disenfranchised children living in Haiti to become the next generation of productive Haitian citizens. And we would like to enlist your generosity in raising $5,400.00 to send 25 orphans, abandoned and destitute children from Our Small Community of Family in Haiti to school this year.
School is not free in Haiti. Over 50% of school aged children in Haiti do not have access to an education because their parents cannot afford it. To receive an education in Haiti parents must be able to not only pay for the tuition and the books but for such fees as registration, entrance and re-entrance fees as well as uniforms. Parents desperate for their children to receive and education to have a chance of getting out of poverty, often times give up their children to complete strangers in the hope that the child will be able to go to school and have a hope for a better future. Less than half the population of Haiti can read and write, and Haiti has the lowest enrollment rate for primary education in the Western Hemisphere. How can a country be expected to get out of poverty and develop as a nation, if the majority of their population is not only 16 years and under and does not have access to even a basic education?
Your monetary donations will cover the cost of registration and entrance fees, tuition, books, school supplies and uniforms for these children who without the benefit of an education would be doomed to becoming street beggars, prostitutes or restaveks (child slaves).
This year the cost averages out to $216 per child.
