Education for All Girls in Slums in Ghana

In a slums of Ghana, where most people live below the poverty line, girls’ education takes the back seat. Poverty, underdevelopment, mass illiteracy, ignorance, complete backwardness and conservatism cause a majority of girls in slums to be deprived of their basic right to education. Various other social problems such as child marriage, trafficking and discrimination leads toward the undermining of girl-child right to education. Every disadvantaged girl child bears witness to a moral offense: the failure to secure her rights to survive, thrive and participate in society. And every excluded girl child represents a missed opportunity – because when society fails to extend to slum girls the services and protection that would enable them to develop as productive and creative individuals, it loses the social, cultural and economic contributions they could have made. Achievers Ghana Education is non-profit, non-political, non-religious, registered community based organization whose vision and mission is to inspire, educate, empower and equip girls in slum communities to pursue every opportunity that is available to them in order to be responsible and useful citizens. Presently, Achievers Ghana has 250 girls that it support in education. Achievers Ghana Education intend to achieve its mission and vision through: 1. Technology: Using technology to advocate, connect, and increase awareness of key issues affecting girls and to support girls in slum communities that are constantly learning, mobilizing and evolving. Critical issues include security, advocacy, and mapping. And also to inspire, educate and equip a girl child in a slum community with the computing skills. 2. Education: Using a variety of educational approaches to build knowledge, skills, and self-confidence. This includes advocating for change through increasing public awareness and influencing attitudes in support of girls’ human rights. 3. Leadership: To change attitudes and systems, girls must be leaders – in protest, advocacy, representation and mobilization. This includes providing young women with important leadership opportunities. These tool will help Achievers Ghana Education to help girls in the slum communities of Ghana who are denied the right to education to be empowered, uncover their potentials and contribute meaningfully to the development of their communities. We call for for kind support to make this possible and help salvage the plight of these innocent young girls. Your donations are most welcome.
