Education for Refugee Children
Organized by: Sweta Desai
Hi family and friends,
As some of you know, I'll be leaving for Turkey soon to donate supplies and funding to many refugees who have fled to Istanbul. I'm reaching out to you in hopes that you will join me in supporting a global cause -- one that I am truly passionate about.
Turkey has seen a massive influx of individuals and families fleeing Syria - currently, the country is sheltering 2 million people (almost 400K in Istanbul alone). There are many incredible organizations on the ground providing shelter, food, and education. I will be volunteering with a group, Small Projects Istanbul, dedicated to providing education for displaced children. You can read more about their work here: http://www.smallprojectsistanbul.org/
For me, the situation is difficult to digest because the statistics are staggering:
- 7.5M children in need of humanitarian aid
- 2.6M no longer in school
- 2M on the run or living as refugees
I think the lack of education in this young generation is the most pressing issue in this crisis; we could witness an entire generation eradicated, those who would otherwise have had the potential to be teachers, doctors, and scientists. Although many Syrian children have lost their families, homes and communities, I'd like to believe there's hope for their future through the platform of education. I also strongly feel education will help this generation overcome the psychological trauma caused by the conflict and hopefully reduce the potential for replicating the hatred and violence they have experienced.
All of the above is why I'm asking for your help! The majority of the funding raised here will be used for a scholarship program to enable primary and high school students to return to school in Istanbul. The remainder of the money will go towards providing food to families.
As the motto on SPI’s website so eloquently states: “The future of Syria may be uncertain, but the future for students and families from Syria does not have to be.”
Thank you in advance, for both your gift and ear.
