BENEFITING: EASTERN ILLINOIS FOODBANK
The Eastern Illinois Foodbank was established in 1983 by a group of dedicated community volunteers concerned about the growing number of families in eastern Illinois facing hunger. With just $2,000 in the bank to get started, the Foodbank distributed more than 770,000 pounds of food the first year, enough for more than 593,000 meals. Since that time, the Eastern Illinois Foodbank has grown by leaps and bounds. In 2008, the Foodbank distributed nearly 5 million pounds of food, providing tens of thousands of meals to more than 43,000 men, women and children each month.
