Yes, I'm back for the 2017 Golf Fights Cancer Golf Marathon. The third time is a charm.
In 2015, I challenged myself like I had never been challenged before. It was such a test mentally and physically. In 2016, I knew what to expect. I made a plan and was able to stick to it. The event was still a huge challenge but with all of you backing me-- I got through it.
This year is different. One of my dearest friends who was a huge supporter to me in this event, lost her battle with lung cancer in February. In 2015, when she heard I was doing this she had just been diagnosed. Her diagnosis made the marathon much more meaningful to me. She and I talked about it leading up to the event. Then during the marathon we talked and texted throughout the day. She was getting chemo, I was chasing a little white ball around. We were helping and supporting each other.
During the marathon in 2016, the scenario was much the same. Her treatment had been working so well -- Immunotherapy was great. Once again, she helped me get through the 100 holes. And she was so happy to hear of my fundraising success. This year will be so different. Her absence, while always felt, will really be felt during the marathon. I know she will be with me-- talking in my ear. You can do it! Keep going! I'm so proud of you!
Other friends have had a very long year of treatment. I know they are eager to be done-- and to be healthy again. Help me to make a difference in their lives. My goal this year is to get back to my 2015 fundraising level of nearly $10,000. I'm hoping support comes in from far and wide! This marathon will truly test my endurance and will -- which are tested daily by all of our loved ones who are faced with a cancer diagnosis.
The beneficiary of the 2017 Marathon is Family Reach which has started a new Financial Treatment Project with Tufts Medical Center. The project is dedicated to providing patients with financial assistance so they can primarily focus on recovering and not on their bills. Pediatric and breast cancer patients are currently their target populations. Families are provided with a Financial Navigator to help them formulate a plan to deal with expenses. The project also offers Direct Assistance Grants. Our goal with this marathon is to raise $250,000.00 to help fund the project and provide increased assistance to families in need.
On June 19th at Juniper Hill-- I'll be asking my body and my golf game to do more than I typically ask of it. And all the while I will be thinking of and tweeting to my buddies who I'm hoping to help. Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Melanoma, Lymphoma, Pancreatic Cancer - it goes on and on-- and all of these have affected someone in my life. Great strides are being made in treatment-- but we need more. Can you help me out? I know many of you have been touched by these too.
Thank you for your support. And I'm going to do my best to keep it in the fairway and get these 100 holes played in record time.
