Running with a Mission: Those of you who know me know I love to run. I’ve run all of the classic distances, including a few marathons, but I needed a new challenge to keep things fresh. This year, I’ve decided to raise funds for a worthy cause while training for and running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on October 12, 2014. The decision to raise funds was the easy part; the decision on which cause to support was not.
The Challenge: I wanted to find an organization that was not only meaningful but also had a positive, unique angle. It’s safe to say that each of us has been impacted by cancer; we’ve lost friends and family to this disease or have witnessed others fighting the battle. There are many organizations that collect funds for research or public education, but the organizations that SUPPORT those with the disease AND their caregivers are few and far between.
The Choice: One in two males and one in three females will develop cancer in their lifetime. Consider how prevalent this disease is, and the price you’d have to pay for one-on-one support as a fighter or caretaker. Imerman Angels, whose mission is to provide personalized connections that enable one-on-one support among cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers, does just that, matching up “Mentor Angels”—cancer survivors or caregivers who’ve truly walked the walk—and they do it for free!
The Goal: Each mile I run, I will run with thoughts of those who’ve battled cancer and their families and friends who’ve supported them.
- As an extra incentive, I will match 10% of all contributions up to my goal
- Please note your contributions are tax deductible
About Imerman Angels: Jonny Imerman was diagnosed with testicular cancer at 26 and, while fortunate enough to have loving support from his family and friends, he wanted to meet someone who had already beaten the same type of cancer. This was the beginning of Jonny’s vision of Imerman Angels, a free service founded in 2003. We match anyone seeking cancer support with a “Mentor Angel”—a cancer survivor or survivor’s caregiver who is the same age, gender and has beaten the same type of cancer. These one-on-one relationships give a cancer fighter or caregiver the chance to ask personal questions and get first-hand support. For more information, visit www.imermanangels.org.
