Elie and Maddie's Lesvos Refugee Crisis Volunteer Trip
Organized by: Madeleine Lauve
When your heart tells you that you belong somewhere, you should listen.
If you are unaware of the severity of the Syrian refugee crisis on the Greek islands, please read some postings here, as it has been our most reliable news source on the situation.
Our names are Elie and Maddie, and we have been following the refugee crisis closely since December, which is when we decided that we are sick of standing by and wishing we could do something to help, then realized that we actually can do something to help. We have been putting the trip off for months, working hard and hoping that the money will come together to allow us to travel overseas and volunteer, but the time to act is now and the money has not come together the way we'd imagined.
We have set an official departure date of September 7. We plan to volunteer on the islands for 5-6 weeks. Our estimated costs, including round-trip tickets, additional travel costs, accommodations, and food, come to about $3000 each. We will fly to Athens and then travel from there to Lesvos, or depending on how the situation has evolved by that time, to another Greek island. We have been in contact with the Starfish Foundation and plan to volunteer with their organization. More can be learned about this group here or here.
We urge you to donate in any way you can to this crisis. We appreciate anything you can do to help us get over there to offer our services, but there are so many people in desperate need of clothing, food and shelter. If you feel inspired, we encourage you to give what you can. Links to donation accounts and facilities can be found on the websites of the links we have provided above.
We will be documenting our experiences and updating everyone via writing and photography, but we urge y'all to do some research on your own as well, and to take on the responsibility of keeping up with reliable news sources covering this situation. We wish for more people to be more aware.
Any traveling we may do outside of this mission will be funded solely by our own personal savings. Any money that might be leftover from this fundraiser at the end of our time volunteering will be donated directly to the Starfish Foundation.
