Help me raise $1,000 for Black Lives Matter for my 30th birthday! Read my fundraising letter below. Thanks for your support!
Friends, Family, and Colleagues,
On May 13th I’ll turn 30th years old. That’s a milestone in anyone’s life! I’ve graduated from college, traveled, found a vocation I’m passionate about, and have many wonderful people in my life. I’m incredibly grateful and blessed.
Over the past few years I’ve learned the stories of many people who aren’t as lucky as me to live to see 30. People like Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, Tamir Rice, and Rekia Boyd.
In memory of them and for my 30th birthday I’m trying to raise $1,000 for Black Lives Matter. Will you make a donation?
Ages 12 - 28, they were all killed extrajudicially by police or vigilantes while driving in their car, walking down the street, riding their bike, playing in the park - simply going about their daily lives. Everyday their families and community members live with the crippling pain of losing their loved one and the trauma of a society that fails to seek justice on their behalfs.
Thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement, I know their names and stories. And probably you do, too. Black Lives Matter has taken these tragic moments of lost black lives and turned them into a global movement for justice.
Will you help me mark my 30th birthday by making a donation to Black Lives Matter?
By organizing with local groups at the grassroots level the Black Lives Matter movement has not only fought for justice for these families and many others. They have also started a global conversation about anti-Black racism that permeates our society. It’s a conversation that affirms the lives of all black people - including women, LGBTQ folks, undocumented, youth, and people with disabilities. This is a powerful example of inclusion that all of our communities can learn from.
As a white person and an ally I know I have a supportive role to play in this important movement that is transforming our society to be more just, equitable, and whole. That’s why I’ll be making a donation for my birthday, too. Together we can make a bigger impact. Any amount that you can give - $10, $30 (the magic number!), $50, $100 - truly makes a difference!
Please join me in fundraising $1,000 for Black Lives Matter for my birthday by making a donation today!
Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “The ultimate measure of a person is not where they stand in moments of comfort and convenience, but where they stand at times of challenge and controversy.” During this divided time in history I hope you’ll join me in supporting Black Lives Matter. It would be the best birthday present ever.
With so much love and appreciation,
P.S. Please check out my Crowdrise fundraising page and donate by May 20th! Donations will go to Black Lives Matter’s fiscal sponsor, the nonprofit IDEX. All donations are tax deductible.
P.P.S. Learn more about Black Lives Matter at their official website. It’s good stuff.
