Elizabeth Teague represents USA - Dream to win the Gold!
Organized by: steve yellen
EVENT DATE Nov 01, 2016
Elizabeth Teague is my inspiration! At 42, a White Sands Missile Range Engineer and a graduate of our University of Texas at El Paso's prestigious Engineering School, she is preparing to represent our country at a track and field world competition in Perth, Australia.
Here is her story - an inspiration to all of those who still, at any age, stay true to their dream. Teague, whose maiden name is Sanchez, was generally accepted as the best discuss thrower in all of Mexico heading into the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
"We went to the Olympic Trials and it was raining real hard, it was a monsoon, just terrible" Teague recalls.
"One of the competitors fell and broke her hip. When they called me for my turn, it was impossible to throw and my discus couldn't meet the minimum standard in the storm. There are a lot of politics in Mexico and they did not select me nor any of us with Olympic dreams that year."
Feeling somewhat betrayed by her home country, she decided to refocus to her other passion - Engineering.
No longer competing would be tough. Having set the Mexican National Record for the discus, while a UTEP scholarship Track and Field student/athlete under iconic Hall of Fame Coach Bob Kitchens, it was difficult, but Elizabeth decided she had to give up her Olympic dream of Gold and marshall her time and energy to her dreams of being a great Engineer. She enjoyed a meteoric rise professionally, yes, but that seed of discontent would always churn inside her. When her 13 year old daughter Sashenka expressed interest in discuss and shot put, it relit the fire! She got the bug again teaching and coaching and started training again. She was better than ever winning golds in many competitions these past years and now has a new dream of being best in the world within her grasp.
This dream we can help her achieve!
Elizabeth has recently earned a place on the USA Master's Team traveling to Perth, Australia. A chance to be the best in the world - to win a Master's Gold Medal. We need $17,210 dollars to fund the trip for her and her family. Every penny of cost is accounted for. We are asking all her fellow Engineers at UTEP and at White Sands, all her fans and friends of UTEP Track and all her supporters at El Paso's USATF Border Association Track and Field Clubs, to gift 10 dollars each toward this dream.
Instead of asking a few to give a lot, we want to ask a lot to give a little. Of course you can do more, but if each of us can gift 4 dollars, we can send a great woman to represent our city and our country!
PS...Should Elizabeth return with the Gold Medal, we will all have a chance to touch the magic of Elizabeth's Gold Medal at a celebratory thank you event.
Elizabeth claims it won't be her Gold Medal, it will be all of ours. Toward that end, all of us who have given, will receive the medal for a one month display in our own homes.
"Operation Elizabeth's Dream" is a GO ! Thank you everyone !
