Twenty-five years ago, my mother had given birth to one child against all the odds, and was preparing to give birth to another against the advice of most of the doctors she consulted. Both she and my brother Ben have Marfan Syndrome, a genetic disorder that made it extraordinarily risky, even life-threatening, for her to carry children. However, one doctor was up to the challenge when my mother, from whom I get my often annoying stubbornness and tenacity, declared her determination to have at least two children. Without the understanding, commitment, and care of Gene Lindsey MD, the Harvard Vanguard cardiologist who had seen her through her first difficult pregnancy, my mother would likely have been unable to bring a second healthy child into the world. Every year without fail, she calls Dr. Lindsey on the same two dates to say thank you—my brother’s birthday and my own. Although the name has changed, the care, commitment, and passion that characterize Atrius Health remain, and my entire family still receives extraordinary care. I experienced this care firsthand for much of my life as a pediatrics patient, and, as an adult, I am able to pursue my often demanding work schedule in Washington DC, secure in the knowledge that my family is receiving the best possible care in Boston.
