BENEFITING: The Ellie Fund
ORGANIZER: The Ellie Fund
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
On October 7th, 2016, my mom, Kathleen M. Kane, lost her 18 month battle with inflammatory breast cancer, surrounded by all of her family and friends. My mom's battle in this time was difficult for her and those who knew and loved her. However, it also showed us the incredible strength and selflessness that my mom had, and reminded us of the importance and power of family.
As I sat around in the weeks following her passing, I wondered what I could do to carry on her memory and to help others who may be going through the same situation. Since I ran my first marathon 4 years ago, running the Boston Marathon has been a dream and goal of mine.
I was fortunate enough to receive a race bib for the Boston Marathon this year from the Ellie Fund.
For those of you who don’t know, the Ellie Fund is an amazing charity that provides a wide range of support for breast cancer patients and their families. The Ellie Fund was incredibly kind and helpful to my mom and my family over the 18 months. My mom's desire to support the Ellie Fund was made clear to all of us in the family.
Thus, on April 17, 2017, I will run the Boston Marathon in honor of my mom, and I know she will be with me then just as she is today. I will run it for her, yet am fundraising for those like her. I would be honored and appreciate any donation you could make in support of my run for Team Ellie. I know that together we can help the Ellie Fund assist and support more families like mine.
The opportunity to run this race in honor of my mom is one which I truly cherish, and am eager to experience. The ability to make a difference in the lives of those undergoing similar circumstances as my mom did is equally exciting and impactful to me.
From my family and myself, thank you so much for the support you have offered us over the recent months, and thank you for your generous donations.

"Strength, support, inspiration & empowerment. You gave all that to me, helping turn my negative energy into positive healing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
The Ellie Fund is proud to once again be a part of the John Hancock Marathon Non-Profit Program. Your generous donation in support of our runners will benefit our Healing Together Patient and Family Care Program, providing essential support services to breast cancer patients and their families including:
- Transportation to medical appointments
- Grocery Assistance
- Prepared/delivered meals
The Boston Marathon was the catalyst to the Ellie Fund’s fundraising efforts with co-founders Jeff and Eliot Popkin running in 1989, 1994 and 1996. We are honored to once again use this historic event as an important platform to help change the lives of the women, men and children that line the marathon route each year.
