BENEFITING: THE CENTER FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Jul 26, 2016
Zachary, Katherine, Denise and I are joining the Pursuit cycling ride to help raise funds and awareness for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities as part of the Pursuit campaign (information) founded by David Baldwin.
When David explained the Pursuit campaign and his plan to ride across the country earlier this year, I was impressed with his vision and commitment to support The Center (information) with its mission of promoting “the pursuit of choice, growth, and personal independence for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.” Knowing David, I was confident he would pursue this goal with a passion and that this effort would have meaningful impact.
Our son Zachary has Down syndrome. As he has progressed through school and life, we have seen with increasing clarity the need for the type of residential and vocational support provided by The Center and similar organizations. The need for awareness of both the challenges faced by this group of individuals and the societal contributions they can make is tremendous.
Learning about the Pursuit campaign and having personal perspective on these issues, our family decided to participate. Zachary, our daughter Katherine, Denise and I are joining David and his team for two days of their ride (from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, MD; ~165 miles). Zachary and Katherine will each ride one day with Elliott on a tandem bike. Please join us in supporting this important endeavor.
Pursuit is a capital campaign with a two-tiered mission: first, to raise $13.5MM for The Center and second, to advance the interests of all individuals with disABILITIES. Across the United States, there are currently 10 million individuals that have intellectual and developmental disabilities. Pursuit’s objective is to raise the public awareness of this underserved population by bicycling from coast to coast this summer.
On June 6, 2016 (the 72nd anniversary of D-Day), David Baldwin, longtime Center Board Member, departed from Astoria, OR, embarking on a 3,500 mile ride that will reach Rehoboth Beach, DE on August 3. David has been accompanied by a small support crew and friends. Along the route, the Pursuit Team will visit leading organizations, universities and research facilities to garner best practices in serving individuals with disABILITIES. We are excited to participate in this remarkable adventure.
