My name is Elliott Adler, and I’d like to tell you about how a 100-year-old organization, Girl Scouts of USA, continues to contribute to the lives of young women by offering a variety of year round quality indoor and outdoor programming that educates girls on health, fitness and wellness. The Girl Scouts were an early proponent of active lifestyles for girls. Founded by Juliette Gordon Low, the organization developed the first girl’s programs for camping, team sports and nutrition; in 1912, they held their first footrace.
Through a friend in the Boston area, I learned that the Girl Scouts are putting together a team of 15 runners in the Boston Marathon to raise funds for the Girl Scouts Get Moving Health Initiative, a program that teaches girls about health and wellness as they experiment with new sports and activities. Being a runner for most of my life--completing three NYC Marathons, several 10-milers, many half-marathons and 10-k races for local charitable organizations--this endeavor seemed an excellent match with my personal belief that a healthy lifestyle is key to self-esteem, confidence and overall success in life. I quickly sent in my application, and I am excited to say that I am now part of the 2015 Boston Marathon Team!
Over my many years of running, I learned to appreciate and treasure the physical, mental and emotional benefits of running for a cause. On behalf of the time-honored Girl Scouts, I hope you will support me in running for the organization that provides young women with the skills and confidence they need to successfully navigate their way in the world. From the original 18 girls in 1912, Girl Scouting has grown to 3.2 million members. In 2012, The White House posthumously awarded Juliette Low with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States.
I am truly honored to be “man enough” to run the Boston Marathon on April 20, 2015 representing the Girl Scouts. Won’t you join me with your support?
Thank you so much for your contribution for the Girl Scouts Get Moving Health Initiative!
