Elliott County Hands Up
Organized by: Albert Mabry
We are starting a new nonprofit corporation called Elliott County Hands Up INC to help improve conditions in Appalachia, and Eastern Kentucky in particular. This region has always been poor, but they always have had a strong work ethic and the ability to withstand hardships. Today, the problems with unemployment and substance abuse have decimated the Appalachian peoples. In order to help combat this, we are establishing programs to both help the youth of the area learn to give back to those who help, and to help find ways to encourage economic growth in the area. Our name reflects the roots of the project, Elliott County Kentucky, where we call home. By starting here, and growing into other regions as we are able, we intend to put Appalachian people back on their own two feet and supporting themselves and others. As we grow our intention is to become a clearinghouse and seed company to establish programs for youth and adults to improve conditions and bring employment opportunities into the regions. We also need to try to get programs established to help youth to become more aware of the need to participate in community service and fundraising work to help others.
