Elssy's new smile
Organized by: Adela Bolet
My friend of 30+ years, Elssy, is a bright, determined, intellectually and spiritually curious woman, who has come upon difficult times due to chronic illnesses, mainly Lupus and Fibromyalgia. Her brilliant career in international development, was cut short after 15 years. Through chemo and other highly toxic meds she has lost most of her teeth. This makes eating almost impossible - even dangerous, and has generated a social barrier that seriously affects Elssy’s vibrant personality. She has much wisdom to share with others, but she is too ashamed to open her mouth. Her case is medically complex and Medicaid does not cover dental needs. Thus, treatment is out of her reach financially, as she survives on a meager social security check. Nonetheless, she is rich in spirit and relentlessly generous with her family in Colombia - and wise from long suffering. Giving Elssy her smile, would be a huge step in turning her life around.
