BENEFITING: Transverse Myelitis Association
EVENT DATE: Oct 06, 2013
Emily was a happy, healthy, beautiful 12 year old when she was stricken with ADEM ( Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis). It started with a cold that progressed to an upper respiratory infection. The VIRUS penetrated her spinal fluid and attacked her brain. We took her to the ER where they did a spinal tap and MRI of her brain. We were told she had to be transported to a hopsital equipped to perform emergency surgery to reduce the swelling on her brain.
They performed a cranetomy to remove a large portion of her skull, to save her life. At this stage, the doctors were baffled. Unfortunately, the swelling continued to reek havoc and she was put into a drug induced coma where she remained for the next 2 months.
There was talk of ADEM, but no one was certain. We were given numerous scenarios all of which were devastating. They did not expect Emily to survive and if she did it would likely be as a paraplegic or in a vegetative state.
We were extremely blessed to have an incredible support system and we NEVER gave up hope. We surrounded Emily with love, prayers and the best of care. Her doctors, nurses, therapists, teachers, tutors, friends and family were beyond amazing!!
Emily did survive. She came out of the coma in a quadriplegic state, She was transported to Marion Joy Hospital where she began extensive therapy. Emily had to re-learn EVERYTHING. How to walk, talk, swallow, read and write. Everything we take for granted, she had to re-learn. Emily was an absolute INSPIRATION to everyone she met. It took an incredible amount of hard work, time and determination, but she did regain her mobility and the rest of her functions.
Emily missed over a year of school, but joined her 8th grade class part-time and received a standing ovation at graduation. She is currently a senior in HS. If you were to meet Emily you would not be able to detect that she was once so critically ill. She is truly a miracle and an exceptional young lady! Sadly, the ADEM was brutally invasive and left Emily's brain with certain insults that can't be mended. She lost her singing voice, her artistic and athletic abilities. She has seizures that are controlled with medication. It takes her longer to process information due to the injury to her brain. She literally has to re-route information to come to the same conclusions we can achieve in the blink of an eye.
Trust me when I tell you her life has changed forever....
All we want is for Emily to live a happy productive life. We don't know what lifelong obstacles she will have from the ADEM. We know we want to SUPPORT her and all the others who were stricken with this horrible disease! We don't want another family to experience the horror we did. We want all doctors to know about these RARE diseases and how to treat them!!
Please help us raise awareness, raise funds and raise hope! THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!
With love and gratitude,
Jayne, Paul, Matthew , Emily Kranz & family
