The Story

Ainsley's Angels of America and EMARC are joining forces to promote healthy living, Special Olympic training, and participation in EMARC’s 5k Road Race. We want to ensure that our friends with developmental disabilities can fully participate in physical activity and exercise.

A message from EMARC:

EMARC is a 501c3 non-profit organization that for nearly 60 years, its mission is to support, serve, and advocate for people with developmental disabilities and their families to ensure they are valued, respected and have the opportunity to fully participate in their communities. Federal i.d. #: 04-2239964. For more info, please visit www.TheEmarc.org

EMARC is thrilled to be partnering with Ainsley’s Angels! EMARC has held an Annual 5k road race in September for almost 20 years. The number of wheelchair runners has increased considerably in the past few years. We have had difficulty in providing running chairs for our individuals with physical challenges, and it is extremely important to us that they can take part in this wonderful event. We hope that by uniting with Ainsley’s Angels we can raise funds to purchase Freedom Push Chairs by Advanced Mobility. Our first goal is to purchase 2 Jogging Push Chairs (Freedom Push Chairs by Advanced Mobility). We hope that you help us reach this goal.

It is crucial to encourage healthy living to the people we serve. Individuals with developmental disabilities are at a greater risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease more frequently and at an earlier age than the general population. If they do develop these diseases, they will be less able than their non-disabled peers to manage them.

After the race, we plan to loan the chairs to families we support, the adults in our Residential Program, and the participants in one of EMARC’s Special Olympics teams. We are optimistic that we can reach our goal. We aim to eventually purchase a sufficient number of chairs to promote our ongoing efforts to foster active engagement within the 30+ Massachusetts communities we serve.
