Please support Every Mother Counts as we work to build a clinic for mothers in need in Indonesia this holiday season! Thanks to Mozilla Firefox and CrowdRise, we're entering a competition and If our charity raises the most, Mozilla Firefox will contribute $25,000!
Just a month ago I was invited to travel to Indonesia to visit with an incredible midwife, Robin Lim. Robin had been nominated for a CNN Hero award and so CNN wanted to see her in action. Along with a small camera crew I was there a couple of days shadowing Robin, seeing her work and her very humane and loving approach to serving her community. At Robin's Bumi Sehat clinics in Indonesia, one of the hardest hit countries in terms of maternal death, they provide free prenatal, birthing services and medical aid for all women.
Robin, through all the much appreciated love and support, became the CNN Hero of 2011.
As Robin stated when accepting her award, "every baby's first breath on Earth could be one of peace and love. Every mother should be healthy and strong. Every birth could be safe and loving. But our world is not there yet." Let's make sure that Every Mother Counts.
We are so proud of her and thrilled that her dream of building a new clinic to provide loving and safe care for pregnant women is closer to becoming a reality. But Robin still needs our help to complete her clinic. The CNN Award of $250,000 helps tremendously but she needs support from people like us to build the facility she needs.
Why we are supporting Robin:
- Three out of five women give birth in South Asia without a skilled birth attendant, which attributes to its high maternal and infant mortality rates (UNFPA).
- In Indonesia, the average family earns the equivalent of $8 a day, according to the International Monetary Fund. But a baby delivery costs about $70 at a hospital, and a Caesarian section can cost as much as $700.
- Robin's current clinic is not safe from earthquakes, so they need funds to complete an earthquake proof clinic.
Hundreds of thousands of women die during pregnancy and childbirth each year. That's 1,000 women every day. The good news is that 90% of these deaths can be prevented. We have the tools and the know-how to save these mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, teachers, doctors, caregivers and community leaders—if we make it a priority.
Every Mother Counts was founded after the completion of my directorial debut, NO WOMAN, NO CRY in 2010. The film gives the issue of maternal health a face and challenges viewers to learn more and take action. Now in its second year, Every Mother Counts is an action and mobilization campaign designed to educate and support maternal, newborn and child health. EMC seeks to engage new audiences to better understand the challenges and the solutions while encouraging them to take action to improve the lives of families by improving the health of girls and women worldwide. The keystone of the campaign is www.everymothercounts.org, an interactive platform providing the tools to raise awareness, education and action.
If you give $16, you'll be entered to win an EMC tee signed by me. Or, you could give $17 for a chance to win a signed CD or $23 for a chance to win a signed DVD.
Plus, I'm going to do a live chat with someone over Skype. Give or raise $21 and you'll be entered to win. All the rules are listed below.
Please join us at www.everymothercounts.org and spread the word to everyone you know.
