Our focus in raising funds online at this time is very targeted: To fund our friends on the ground in my (Rais) home city of Srinagar, India who will be providing basic critical needs like food, potable water, baby formula, medicine, bedding, clothing, housewares, water purification systems, and winter supplies to the worst flood-affected areas.
The rescue effort in Srinagar is being led by neighbors helping neighbors; risking their own lives to help eachother.
If we were able to be there on the ground helping neighbors, friends and family we would. Please help us help from afar. ~Rais and Hilary
What Has Happened?
Since the beginning of September 2014 Kashmir and it's surrounding areas in Northern India have seen the worst monsoon rains and floods in more than 60 years. On Saturday, September 6th we lost contact with our family and our friends, as the flood waters began to rise over two stories, and communications and power were cutoff.
What We Do Not Know
We have had no communication with family, friends, nor business partners who are on the ground in the flood affected areas of Srinagar. We have no idea about the safety and well-being of Rais' father, sister and her family, nor our sister-in-law and our 10 month old niece. We pray that they are safe and well, and that we simply cannot contact them. Please join us in that prayer.
What We Do Know
We do know that our family homes in Srinagar are under flood water, and that Dadiji (as all affectionately calls Rais' dad) lives alone and was not able to salvage much before evacuating to the home next door that has a higher level third story.
Last we heard from our sister, via our brother Rauf who is currently in New Delhi, our sister-in-law was with her parents and our 10 month old niece, and were on the third story of their home.
From news reports we know that more than 2,000 villages and the city of Srinagar were, and largely continue to be, submerged. Hospitals and businesses have been submerged. Over 50 bridges destroyed and the water supply damaged.
There has been some rescue by the government provided to the victims: but the task is enormous and rescue efforts have largely been locals helping locals when they can. They are in critical need of potable water, medicine, baby formula, food, warm blankets and winter supplies.
I personally cannot get the memories of images of Katrina and New Orleans out of my mind. I have tears while I write this just thinking about the chaos on the ground, in a community I love, and we feel helpless sitting half a world away.
It's A Grassroots Rescue
We are working thru the process of setting up a charitable fund under our business Indus Imports, LLC which is based in Alexandria, VA and are working to develop a longer term strategy for aiding in the community economic recovery. We're in for the long haul. For now, we have to do something and we're asking you to help.
Our focus in raising funds at this time is very targeted:
- To assist our contacts on the ground in Srinagar, Kashmir who will be providing basic needs like food, potable water, baby formula, medical supplies, bedding, clothing, housewares, water purification systems, medical supplies, etc. to the worst affected areas.
Every single dollar donated will greatly impact what we are able to do to aid Srinagar. Give what you can. Share this fundraiser with your networks. Share it again, and tell our story.
You can help us help them. Give generously today.
With so much love and gratitude,
Rais and Hilary Mughloo
