April 15, 2013 is a day I will never forget. Late afternoon I get a phone call from my brother asking if I spoke to our parents and whether or not they were okay. I turned on the TV, saw the scene at the finish line and my immediate thought was that our parents were dead. My mother and I are both runners and it's a long time tradition to watch the Boston Marathon from the finish line. My parents, honoring this tradition, were standing directly in front of Marathon Sports. Hours went by before I finally heard anything. My parents were taken from the finish line and are alive thanks to the wonderful medical staff and team. I want to run to honor and thank everyone who took care of them.
My mother was a runner. The unfortunate events of April 15, 2013 took all that away from her. It took her nearly 1 year to walk again unassisted and in the recent months, has tried running again. On the one year anniversary of the bombing and again throughout 2014 Boston Marathon weekend, I attended numerous events for victims and survivors. It was an emotional, healing, inspiring experience. On the morning of the 2014 Boston Marathon, I took all I was feeling and literally ran with it. I put on my sneakers and ran from my home in Brookline, towards Boston, past the finish line and just kept going for close to 4 hours. I truly understand how Forrest Gump felt, "I just felt like running". I haven't stopped running since.
I run because my mother can't. I run to honor all those whose livelihood was taken away from them. I run to honor those who cared for the victims, survivors and their families. Running the Boston Marathon will bring more closure and healing to my family and bring the joy back to an event and tradition we shared for years.
