BENEFITING: Big City Mountaineers
EVENT DATE: Jul 07, 2017
We are incredibly grateful for outdoor experiences, which have added so much to our lives mentally and physically. By fundraising for Big City Mountaineers, we hope to pass on our good fortune.
About Big City Mountaineers
Big City Mountaineers transforms the lives of under-resourced urban youth around the country through wilderness mentoring expeditions that instill critical life skills. They partner with community-based youth organizations and caring adult volunteers who act as mentors in the field to help young people realize their potential. Their curriculum, based on the Developmental Assets framework, improves integrity, self- esteem, responsibility, decision-making abilities and communication skills in close to 1,000 youth annually.
There is science behind this!
Data shows that experiences in nature reduce stress, improve physical health, lead to better educational outcomes, and build civic mindedness- that means outdoor experiences are good for teens and the environment they will be left with. Big City Mountaineers shows results including decreased substance use and violence, and better educational outcomes, leadership, and health habits.
Diversity in outdoor experiences
Unfortunately, the immense benefits of outdoor experiences are not enjoyed equally. Teens of color are sorely underrepresented in the outdoors. 85% of the participants in Big City Mountaineers' wildnerness expeditions live below the poverty line, and most are teens of color.
To raise money for this fantastic cause, we are climbing Mt. Shasta in July. Mt. Shasta is great challenge for beginner and experienced climbers alike. The snow-covered West Face is an ideal route for learning ice axe and crampon skills, and instructors from Shasta Mountain Guides will make sure we are prepared. Over the three-day climb we’ll set up a basecamp in remote Hidden Valley, where we’ll stage our (hopefully!) successful summit bid.
Big City Moutaineers sets the fundraising goals for each climb. Between the two of us, our climb will fund week-long wildnerness expeditions for about six teens!
