BENEFITING: Freedom To Walk Foundation Inc
Hey! Thanks for visiting the fundraising page for "Emily’s Freedom to Walk”. My name is Katherine Zmoda, and I’m raising money in honor of my big sister Emily who has benefited tremendously from her Walk Aide, which she could not have acquired without the Freedom to Walk foundation. I am hoping to raise money to donate to the Freedom to Walk Foundation in honor of my own personal super hero, Emily. Emily is turning 27 years old on April 30th, so it is my goal to raise $270 and surprise her with it for her birthday!
In October of 2015, Emily experienced something that change our family’s lives. She suffered from a seizure when at home and was rushed immediately to the hospital where we found out that she had a brain tumor. Those are two words you never would expect to hear about someone so close to you. She soon underwent surgery to have it removed, and I will never forget her bravery and courage Emily showed as she was preparing for such a daunting experience. Unfortunately, there were some complications and Emily woke up with paralysis on the left side of her body as a result of a surgery induced stroke.
The road to recovery since that day has been long and challenging, but Emily’s perseverance and spirit has carried her through the ups and downs. She cherishes her victories and pushes through the adversities. Emily has spent countless hours in physical therapy in order to regain simple skills that we all take for granted, including walking. My family and I have witnessed her accomplish tremendous milestones in regaining movement and control of her body. I am so proud to call this amazing woman my big sister and aspire to determined, positive, and bad ass as she is.
One of the tools that have helped Emily with her recovery is the WalkAide. This device helps those who experience “foot drop” as a result of weakness in nerves or muscles due to Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury, or Traumatic Brain Injury. The WalkAide uses functional electrical stimulation (FES) to improve walking ability of those with foot drop. This device is NOT covered by insurance and is unaffordable for many who need it. This is where the Freedom to Walk Foundation comes in! The Freedom to Walk Foundation works with the manufacturer of the WalkAide to reduce the cost of the device so that more people in need can access it. My sister was one of these people!
In addition to this, the Freedom to Walk Foundation also gives away one device each year to a child who needs it. This organization helped my sister get back to walking in a shorter time than she would have without the WalkAide. Thank you for reading our story, and please consider donating so that this foundation can help more resilient and courageous people like Emily on their road to recovery.
