BENEFITING: Nomi Network
EVENT DATE: Oct 10, 2014
I have this crazy dream that, instead of celebrating with presents, we can raise $2,200 for Nomi Network for my 22nd birthday on October 10. Here's why...
The short story: I got to meet Diana Mao, the founder of this company, when she spoke to one of my classes and I want to support her work to bring freedom, education, and opportunity to women rescued from human slavery.
The longer story: Every 2 seconds, someone in the world is taken to be sold to someone else as their slave. On average, someone is taken into slavery at about 12 years old. When I was 12, I was standing on stage singing with a cheesy smile on my and skipping back and forth down a soccer field with my friends. These children are exploited, forced to mine, pick, sew, or clean in unhealthy and unsafe conditions, and used for their bodies.
Nomi Network is partnering with other anti-trafficking organizations to train and educate women who have been taken out of this awful existence. The women are taught to make beautiful products, a sustainable and rewarding job. They are actually paid enough for their work, and they are taught to read and use computers. Diana Mao, co-founder of Nomi, is an incredibl businesswoman and follower of Christ who truly desires to bring freedom to these women. I want to stand alongside her in this mission.
If you have any questions, thoughts, or ideas, I'd love to talk with you more about Nomi Network, their vision, and fighting against human slavery!
