Our Mission

Healing, Hope & Hospitality for All

Since it's founding in 1968 by the late Fr. David Kirk, Emmaus House of Harlem has extended healing, hope, and hospitality to all who have come to it's door in need.  Housed in a turn of the century brownstone near 120th & Lenox Avenue, Emmaus works toward the renewal and transformation of society. Integrating direct services (food, clothing, and shelter) with advocacy (ESL/SSL courses, GED preparation, job readiness), promotes sustainable change in communities; one person at a time.

Take Raymond for instance. Raymond came to our door on the Fourth of July with no place else to go.  Born to an immigrant family from the Dominican Replblic, Raymond lost both of his parents by the time he was sixteen.  He never finished High School, lost his job at a local supermarket, and when he could no longer make rent he knew that he needed help.  Since his time at Emmaus Raymond is finishing his GED, is working and saving money for his own place, and, most importantly, he haecome part of a community which supports him.  But that's enough from us, hear what Raymond has to say about Emmaus:

"I just feel like ever since I've been here my life has done a 360.  I feel like my life before I got here was all over the place, but since I got here my life is going to where I want it to be.  It's going straight.  Not going up and down. I'm progressing. Taking baby steps until I reach my goal.  Emmaus is, to me, a blessing.  There are so many words I could use.  I mean, I feel blessed being here."

The work of Emmaus exists at the work of our Hands, your hands and ours.  With no paid staff, and very little overhead, a substantial portion of your contribution goes directly into the programs and services; the kinds of programs and services which have allowed Raymond to turn his life around.  We know that many of you have supported the work of the House in the past, and for that, we are thankful.  We know that, for some of you, it may be a first time contribution to Emmaus.  To you we say, welcome to a great organization.  At this time we ask you to consider how you could support our ongoing work, the ongoing work that we take up together.
