THE STORY:

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This proposal highlights a project on “Improving the well being of a child through health, education, nutrition, child protection and social inclusion. The purpose of this project is to have a society where all OVC live to their full potential and their rights and aspirations are fulfilled. YOLIDA Orphans and other vulnerable Children Sustainable Livelihood Project (OVC-SL Project) was borne out of a real and felt need to ameliorate the OVC situation in Kabarole District that is by far characterized by food insecurity, dropping out of School, little income for basic livelihood, early marriages, child labour, poor Health among others. A statement of the problem, project objectives together with an outline of targeted beneficiaries and implementation strategy are stated. An explanation on how cross cutting issues namely gender, financial services, green growth, rights based approach and sustainability will be mainstreamed in the maize value chain is made. The OVC SL Project aims at contributing to a society where OVC live to their full potential and their rights and aspirations are fulfilled. The specific objectives of this project are: 1. To improve on the capacity of individuals, households, community and organizations to deliver effective adequate care and support services to OVC and OVC households by march 2017. 2. To improve on the socio-economic security of 2000 orphans and vulnerable Children OVC by the end of this project by March 2017. 3. To improve on food security and nutrition status of 1,600 people (2000 OVC and 400 OVC households) by the end of this project. The key outcomes of the Project are: 1. Ability and capacity of OVC and OVC households to sustain their livelihood improved, improved food security and nutrition for OVC and their households and 2. improved capacity of individuals, households, community and Organizations to deliver effective adequate care and support services to OVC and OVC households, 3. providing Agricultural inputs for demonstration to OVC households, providing one-to-one technical support to OVC households (i.e. extension services), 4. Referring OVC and OVC households to other service providers, and project monitoring, review and evaluation are the activities that will be implemented. To execute the above activities, YOLIDA will employ the following strategies: • Building on the human rights – based approach to programming, focusing on the most vulnerable children and households, • Promoting gender equity, ensuring participation of vulnerable children and families, collaboration and linkages and documentation and assessment. Finally, during the life of the project, the following outputs will be achieved: 1600 caregivers trained in Village Savings Loans Association methodology (VSLAs), 1200 (60%) OVC trained in Artisan Apprenticeship, 100 VSLAs formed and functional, 1200 (60%) OVC trained in life skills,1600 OVC caregivers trained in sustainable livelihoods /agriculture, 400 OVC households provided demo materials, 72 of food and nutritional security demonstration sites established, 400 OVC households reached with agriculture extension services , 1600 caregivers trained in income generating activities, 1600 caregivers trained in agro processing and Post- harvest handling, 600 OVC caregivers trained in sustainable livelihoods /agriculture, 400 OVC households provided demo materials, 72 of food and nutritional security demonstration sites established, 400 OVC households reached with agriculture extension services , 1600 caregivers trained in income generating activities.1600 caregivers trained in agro processing and Post- harvest handling.
