THE STORY:

Dear friend, and inaugural brand ambassador!

I wanted to express my deep gratitude for your involvement and support in laying the foundation for DESDE™ over this past year, and for your presence in my life. Launching DESDE has been a dream in the making for over two years.  My family comes from rural, humble communities in Panama.  The economic mobility my family saw in just one generation changed the trajectory of my life.  The same can be true for many others currently living in poverty.  I have devoted my career to social change and am excited to work with artisans in my home country of Panama.

WHAT IS DESDE?

DESDE is Spanish for “from” bringing a sense of empowerment and transparency to the label of origin.  DESDE is a brand for ethical fashionable accessories co-produced and co-developed with marginalized and economically isolated Latin American artisans.

• Our trainings help artisans create new designs and empower them to navigate new markets directly.

• Our online portal will include an online shop and a democratic platform that connects artisans to conscious customers (like you!) to ensure they can earn higher revenues, keep their craftsmanship alive, and have a platform to share their traditions with the world.

• DESDE also invest in artisan advised projects that will aid dire needs and help uplift their communities.

WHY DESDE?

I started DESDE because it is closely tied to my humble roots.  As a Panamanian immigrant to the U.S. I witnessed the difficulty artisans face growing up. In the small Panamanian village where my grandparents live I met Dioce, a Ngäbe-Buglé woman, with amazing craftsmanship but held back by a lack of access to people who value her work. Learning similar stories from more artisans, I wanted to create a sustainable solution--something with the potential to change the way consumers connect with artisans who make their products, spur economic mobility and show the rich diversity of Latin America.

THE PROBLEM:

These skilled artisans have significant undervalued potential and need market access.  The life of a rural Latin American artisan is hard.

• Statistically she is likely indigenous, owns no land, earns less than $2 a day, has no access to training, and lacks access to markets and opportunities according to the International Fund for Agricultural Development.

• Regionally, she is one of 164M living in poverty.  Spending days handcrafting a product that will sell for mere dollars, if she can sell it, the $18BN US jewelry and handbag markets are unreachable to her.

DESDE PANAMA

DESDE’s first line of products will be “DESDE Panama”.  Panama’s poverty rate is 40%.  It is the only country in Central America that does not have a fair trade certified producer.  Working with artisans from the outset of creating a product will be a competitive advantage in the product development process that will also allow strong partnerships to be built, and more profound, quantifiable social impact to occur.

WHAT YOUR SUPPORT HAS & WILL HELP WITH:

LAUNCH PHASE PART 1 (Timeline: April- December 2014)

I have spent the last year laying the foundation to launch DESDE.  In 2014 we raised over $3,400 from a generous group of supporters.  Your thoughtfulness and generosity has allowed me to keep working on DESDE’s vision, and is helping fund this first stage of developing our products and working with artisans. My most sincere thanks and appreciation for your support!

LAUNCH PHASE PART 2: (Timeline: January 1- June 1, 2015)

GOAL: $30,000

Your support towards this second part of the launch phase is critically needed seed funding that will help DESDE:

  • Continue its momentum to produce its first line of products
    • We are currently working with communities representing over 60 artisans in four different areas of Panama.  Our first products will be produced with one to two of the communities in preparation for sales this spring and summer.
    • In our product development phase, we hone samples, help each community with branding to capture the historical significance of their designs, materials and technique. We finalize products with additional partner support if needed, with the long term goal of investing profits in artisan’s training to complete whole products in cases where this capacitation is helpful.
  • Develop and offer our first series of artisan trainings
    • Building long-term relationships with our artisan communities is at the heart of our work. We meet in community identifying artisans’ needs, providing quality standard training, creating and editing samples, and explaining costumers’ likes and needs in developing a first line of products together.
    • After producing the first line of products we customize training and resources needed to help artisans sustainably develop high quality products long term.  As an example, for one of our communities this may mean more technical training in sewing and finishing their product into a bag.

SUPPORTING:

I would be grateful for your support at any level!  Your contribution will make it possible for us to launch DESDE and begin sales.  The generosity of all involved with time, resources and treasure has been overwhelming and a true blessing.
