THE STORY:

Kibera is the largest slum in Nairobi and the largest urban slum in Africa. Most of Kibera’s residents live in extreme poverty, earning less than $1.00 per day. Unemployment rates are high. There are few schools, and most people cannot afford to send their children to school. Clean water is scarce, which means diseases caused by related poor hygiene are prevalent. A great majority of people living in the slum lack access to any medical care.

Over a year ago, Human Needs Project (HNP) built the Kibera Town Center to provide essential services to slum residents. The Center, which houses its own complete wastewater management system, provides a place for residents to shower, wash their clothes, get clean water, take classes and socialize.

HNP’s Kibera Town Center has been fully operational for over a year now and is having a dramatic positive impact on people’s lives; however, HNP was unable to complete the first phase of their solar operation at the time of opening, and given the electricity-intensive nature of the operations, leadership decided make solar power their next priority toward achieving their energy net-zero goal. The Center is currently running on local, highly-unreliable grid power, with diesel back-up.

EBL is working with the HNP team to size/scale an appropriate system for the Center and intends to support additional projects, including a nearby school.
