BENEFITING: The Empowerment Plan
Ohio winters can be brutal. This is especially true for those who are homeless. I recently discovered an incredible organization called the Empowerment Plan that has found one way to help make cold winters more bearable.
The Empowerment Plan is a Detroit based nonprofit organization focused on permanently elevating families from the generational cycle of homelessness. A large part of that business is built on the manufacturing of special coats that are very warm, water resistant, and can be converted into a sleeping bag if needed.
Each coat costs $100, My goal is rasie enough money to purchase at least 50 coats and cover the cost of shipping. These coats would be distributed to homeless men and women throughout Central Ohio. I'd love to reach the goal before the end of December so we can get the coats out before the weather really gets cold.
The Empowerment Plan also hires single parents from local shelters and provide them with training and full-time employment as seamstresses so that they can earn a stable income, find secure housing, and regain their independence. The individuals we hire manufacture a coat designed to meet the needs of those in the homeless community. The durable EMPWR Coat can transform into a sleeping bag at night or an over- the-shoulder bag when not in use. Since 2012, we have provided employment to 34 homeless individuals—all of whom have now secured permanent housing for themselves and their families —and distributed over 15,000 coats to those in need across the U.S. and Canada.
