The vision for the ENRICHED 4 U weekend is based on a true story. The story of Teddy "The Bear" Davis and D. Fredrica Brooks-Davis.
After three months of marriage Teddy and I found ourselves sitting in a hospital room two weeks before Christmas listening to his medical team inform us that he had a brain tumor and the standard of care would include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Can you imagine the thoughts going through our minds?
After being diagnosed with cancer or a comparable disease a patient and his/her spouse could spend 90% of their day/week attending doctor's visits, hospital stays, rehabilitation appointments etc. To that end it is often difficult for the couple to focus on themselves let alone their relationship. This is especially true for couples who are newly married and trying to adjust to the diagnosis, decisons around family planning, the possible loss of a spouse/partner, etc. Throughout our journey Teddy and I remained committed to celebrating each moment and our relationship. We also had the opportunity to meet couples who struggled with celebrating their relationship in the midst of the storm. Consequently, it became our desire to help other couples enrich their relationship while fighting to win.
My beloved Teddy made his transition July 11, 2014 after fighting a courageous battle. Although he is no longer with me to see our dream realized his legacy continues. Join me and the BD-IBCA bring laughter, hope and love to couples who are within the first three years of marriage facing a cancer diagnosis or comparable disease.
