BENEFITING: MOTHER TO MOTHER OF LEXINGTON
WIM as a women organization decided to form a Single Mother Unit in year 2010 to empower mothers who have been ignored by government institutes and NGO’s in Sri Lanka. Whether they are widows, single mothers (not legally married/ raped victims) or divorced is vulnerable to sexual harassments, ill treatment, poverty and discrimination. In Sri Lanka, one in every five households is headed by a woman of the total female households. 23.3% are located in urban centers, and 65% are headed by widows.
When a woman is single with children she is heavily discriminated against both by law and by custom still in our society. According to statistics and police media rape of young girls on the rise and due to not enough security for children and many of these victims are children of Single Mothers or Widows.
WIM, considering all above started to help these mothers by conducting workshops and counseling to stand on their own feet, and not to give up on their children and dreams. Presently we are conducting workshops, counseling and entrepreneurship courses in rural areas for young girls, war widows and single mothers. We are now on the 3rd Step to help them to be self reliant and start up their career or business ,for this we need to provide them with Financial Assistance, and most of these women do not have legal documentation to receive loans or government assistance.
WIM dose not have donors. We do it with our own incomes and few sponsorships. Presently under WIM we have 25,000 single mothers who are asking us to help them with basic needs to start a small business at home. We are now in short of USD 1150 = LKR 150,000.
