EVENT DATE: Aug 04, 2012
Mileage Tracker: 900
Update: The fundraiser will continue throught the end of trip on July 29!
The idea for this bike trip began a year ago in June, on a photography trip to Asseradores, Nicaragua. I met a woman named Meg Boren who runs a local clinic there, and started the Circle of Empowerment organization. They have helped in the creation of many new schools and clinics, implemented a busing system for the grade school and high school students, and organized weekend tutoring programs for students. They bring Nicaraguan medical students into small localities for training and outreach. $90 can entirely fund a child's schooling, tutoring and supplies for a whole year- even a small contribution can make a huge difference.
Last July, I began a Crowdrise site and planned an epic bike trip from Brooklyn to Montreal to raise funds for the Circle of Empowerment organization. A week before the trip was to begin, I managed to injure my knee and was told I had to wear a brace for 4 weeks! I was not allowed to bend my knee in any way, and alas, had to call off the trip. The funds that people had graciously donted still made their way to Nicaragua-- a redeeming aspect of the otherwise disappointing situation.
This summer, I am trying again. The route will be slightly different: Albany, NY - Montreal - Quebec City - The Forks, Maine and on to Skowhegan, Rockland and Portland. The contributions will again go to Circle of Empowerment, who continues their efforts and has added programs to provide support in domestic violence situations.
I will be blogging prior to and throughout the trip, which begins on July 14. I will provide tales form the trail and upload photos from the open road. Visit the Blogger page to check in:
Although Circle of Empowerment is affiliated with a church located in Grafton, WI, contributions to their work in Nicaragua are focused on education and medical needs, rather than a denominational agenda. http://circleofempowerment.info
Please make a contribution if you can, and let me know if you'd like to join for part of the ride!
