Every week I get a chance further Nicole's approach towards college. My mentee, Nicole, is an intensely focused and ambitious ninth-grade student who attends the Marble Hill School for International Studies in the Bronx. In a world where opportunity is not equally distributed, I'm excited to play my small part to set right that imbalance. I hope that you will help.
iMentor NYC is a school-based mentoring program that empowers high school students in low-income communities to graduate high school, succeed in college, and achieve their ambitions. They partner with public schools to provide each of their students with a college-educated mentor for three to four years. Students work with their mentors one-on-one, in-person and online, to develop strong personal relationships, nurture a college aspiration, navigate the college application process, and build critical skills that lead to college success. Pairs meet once a month in-person at group events and email once a week on iMentor’s secure online platform. iMentor program staff facilitate and monitor each mentor-mentee pair’s progress through the iMentor curriculum and provide coaching and resources along the way.
I first met Nicole several months ago and we immediately clicked. We have a lot in common. She wants to attend college in Boston; either at my alma mater - Northeastern University - or maybe Harvard. She knows she has a lot of hard work ahead, and she is already doing everything in her power to reach that goal. I'm glad to be able to support her.
iMentor is a program I really believe in. I think that it works, and the evidence proves it. 97% of iMentor high school seniors completed college applications in 2013. 75% of iMentor’s 2013 high school graduates enrolled in college, compared with only 50% of low-income students nationwide. 83% of iMentor students who entered college persisted into their second year, compared to the national average of 66% for first-generation college students.
I need your support to make college a reality for ALL students. Every dollar counts and gets us closer to giving every student the opportunities they deserve. It costs $1,000 per year to support each mentoring pair and every contribution will help support more pairs like us. I would be so grateful if you would consider making a donation to sponsor my relationship with Nicole.
