Jason Rome's Fundraiser:

Enable Charlotte

My friend Lane Stewart and I put our heads together this year to start a new charity group called Enable Charlotte. Through a friends introduction I met the good people at The Arc of Union County and found out there are a large number of families in the area who have kids and adults with disabilities living with them who don't get all the services they need. Oftentimes resources are available but the expertise and volunteers to complete projects aren't. Simple projects such as building wheelchair ramps, enlarging doors, installing railings or even doing a simple yard cleanup can really help these families. With Lane's expertise in all sorts of construction projects and our combined network of young giving professionals we started Enable Charlotte. Our goal is to Re-enable families that have felt disabled to try to make just one thing easier in their life. We've already completed two projects but we need your help.

Last week we helped install a protective cover on grass for a family whose son, Daniel, is in a wheelchair due to multiple foot surgeries he has had to have to correct for a chromosomal deletion he was born with. Daniel has never been able to learn how to ride a bike or play sports with kids his age and his mother has to push him up and down a grassy hill to their backyard where their ramp is every time they want to leave the house. We installed 150 feet of material and with the help of the Arc of Union County were able to pay for most of the material but we need to make up some of the additional money.

This hits particular close to home for my family and I as my father was in a wheelchair for several years prior to passing this past year. It was a huge task to get him in and out of the house, up and down the stairs, and to and from his favorite chair every day for my mother. Luckily my family was blessed enough to have the means to install a lift and ramp to ease the process but not every family has that. Through this group we hope to make it easier for more families.

This Christmas we're asking for donations not only for this project but for other projects in the future. 500$ is a small starting point for us and with more funds we can complete more projects. I'd ask you to consider making a donation in honor of someone that you know who has dealt with a disability or if you're lucky enough to not need much for Christmas this year maybe ask someone to make a donation in your name. If not to this cause then another worth cause close to your heart.
