Dear Friends and Family,
On March 20th I will be running my 4th half marathon in a year and my 2nd time running the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon. I’m hoping that you can all support me and iMentor, the non-profit organization that I am raising money and awareness for. Even the smallest donation will help towards my $1,000 goal and all donations are tax deductible. You can donate to this cause on my behalf by going to https://www.crowdrise.com/imentorNYCHalf16/fundraiser/enakunin and clicking on the “Donate To This Fundraiser” link to the right. I wanted to share a little bit about the charity, why I am running and why I chose this particular charity.
iMentor builds mentoring relationships that empower students from low-income communities to graduate high school, succeed in college, and achieve their ambitions. Students work with their mentors one-on-one, in-person and online, to develop strong personal relationships, nurture a college aspiration, navigate the college application process, and build critical skills that lead to college success. It costs iMentor $1,000 to provide one mentor-mentee pair with access to iMentor’s proven college success curriculum and resources. All funds raised through Team iMentor help fund these mentoring relationships. To learn more about iMentor and iMentor NYC visit: https://www.imentor.org/
Why I am Running:
This race will mark the anniversary of my first half marathon, which also happened to be the 2015 NYC Half Marathon. Just shy of a year prior to my first half, I went for a jog along the Hudson River with a good friend who tried to convince me to run a half marathon. She will never let me forget my reaction: “I WOULD NEVER, COULD NEVER AND AM NOT INTERESTED IN RUNNING A HALF MARATHON.” Never in a million years did I think I could physical and mentally run 13.1 miles. About 9 months later, a group of friends convinced me (you all know I tended to be easily convinced J) to put my name in the lottery for the 2015 NYC Half Marathon. Of course, most of the people who convinced me to sign up did not get in, but I did. The next 10 weeks I was very dedicated and spent time training – running in the snow, running in 5 degrees, running when I did not feel like running and going to physical therapy for (luckily) minor injuries. On March 15th, 2015 I completed my first half marathon AND beat all expectations I had for time. 2 months later I went on to run my 2nd half marathon and 4 months after that I ran my 3rd half marathon. These long races have made me feel more physically and mentally fit than ever before! This year I wanted to mark the anniversary of completing my 1st half marathon by running another half marathon while raising money for a good cause that will help change a student’s life.
Why I Chose iMentor:
I wanted to choose an organization that is little bit less known and gets a little less support than some of the other bigger, more well-known charities out there. It was also very important for me to raise money towards a cause that I can relate to and am passion about. While I did not grow up in NYC and did not receive financial help/mentoring through iMentor, I was a first-generation college student who did receive financial help and educational mentoring through various organizations from the time I immigrated to the US up to the time I went to college. Without the help of organization similar to iMenor I would not be where I am today. For this reason, I chose iMentor and am hoping to help make a difference in a high school students life through raising awareness and money for the organization.
This is the first time I am raising money and I hope that you will support me and this cause! Again, no amount is too small and will help make a difference!
Thank you in advance for donating! And of course I would love if you come cheer me on!
