Tuberculosis is treatable and preventable — yet it claims over a million lives every year.
Timor-Leste has one of the highest prevalence of TB in the world. Its mountainous region makes it difficult for people to travel dozens of miles to the nearest hospital. And since TB treatment requires regular visits over several months, most patients never see treatment to completion, leaving them to infect their family and eventually their community.
In partnership with Timor-Leste's largest free healthcare center, Bairo Pite Clinic, we launched Doorstep Treatment Support — a transformative initiative that brings TB care straight to patients' homes. We train local healthcare workers to arrange regular visitation and administer in-home treatment. This patient-centered program is flexible and responsive to the needs of each patient, and raises awareness to keep communities safe from infection. Children under the age of 5, who are considered most vulnerable to the disease, are given preventative therapy. Additionally, healthcare workers teach patients and their families about TB, how it spreads, and how to prevent its transmission. After the diagnosis and initiation of treatment, healthcare workers visit patients and their families every two weeks to evaluate progress and provide support until everyone is cured and protected from TB.
How You Can Help:
With an adherence rate of 89%, our TB care program has proven to be effective — but we need your help to continue the initiative until everyone in Timor-Leste is free of the disease. Your donation and support are greatly appreciated.
