Ghana Research and Education Alliance for Turtles
Organized by: Dan Barbour
I will be living in Ghana studying several species of turtles. I will be working extensively with community members to combat poaching as well as harvesting of turtles for the pet trade and as bush meat. If a research facility is constructed it would facilitate the education of Ghanaian students in wildlife biology and conservation. Several species of marine turtles nest on Ghanaian beaches. The research facility and community center will allow work to be conducted with artisanal fishers and community members in an effort to limit the mortality rate of marine turtles that are caught in the fishers nets. We hope to work with the community members to develop alternative and sustainable methods that allow them to continue to provide for themselves and their families while also providing for the long term survival of these endangered species.
