BENEFITING: Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital
To celebrate my one year living anniversary of becoming a paraplegic, I have compiled a 5 person marathon relay team of people who were directly involved in my treatment after my accident. Together we will cover 26.2 miles in the Vermont City Marathon Relay in Burlington, VT, which will be exactly one year after my accident. On May 29th, 2015, the day before my 25th birthday, I was helping friends move a piano out of a pick-up truck when it fell over on top of me. One of the vertebrae in my back shattered, paralyzing me incompletely from the waist down. 8 hours of surgery later, I became a bionic person held together by titanium rods, screws, a steel cage, and human cadaver. Over the past 10 months I have re-learned how to sit, stand, walk, do stairs, swim, and ski. My recovery has been made possible due to the exceptional care I received at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital - both as an inpatient for a month and as an outpatient since July 2nd, 2015. The physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, therapeutic recreational therapists, physical therapists, and adaptive sports center have helped me find the strength I have needed to tackle this recovery head-on and to never lose hope that I will get stronger. Let's help others have access to the same treatment and programs I have benefited so much from and to be able to have the strength to conquer any challenge placed before them after a life-threatening illness or injury.
