BENEFITING: Flights of Fantasy Story Theater
EVENT DATE: Nov 22, 2016
ALL children have amazing potential and we love working with them and their parents to explore and nourish that potential so that they experience success in school and throughout their lives. Our Engaging Families in Literacy workshops offer parents a chance to learn fundamental skills that will help their children improve the way they listen, think, create and read.
There’s nothing more important then when a parent scoops up their child and starts reading to them. It is caring, it is inspirational, it is love. Children learn about feelings and ideas through listening and speaking and parents can give them a head start in school and in life by being the first to read to them.
Sonia in East LA said – “I didn’t know reading to my children was important. No one read to me when I was little but I think I will try it.”
Diego in Arleta on receiving his own picture book – “You mean I get to take it home with me? Forever? It’s mine?”
Michael in Inglewood – “I don’t read so well but now I see you can read the pictures and that can tell the story too.”

"Literacy is at the root of a child's ability to succeed, and family plays a major role in that success,” says the National Center for Family Literacy. The Engaging Families in Literacy workshop will highlight the importance of reading aloud to children and the significant role parents play in their child's education. We will be partnering with the Los Angeles Public Library and several Head Start centers to provide the workshops. Two instructors from Flights of Fantasy Story Theatre will demonstrate techniques that improve vocal and facial expression and show how a shared reading experience can positively effect family relationships and a child's academic success. Age appropriate story lists and supplementary handouts and activities will be provided as well as a quality picture book to take home and add to their home library.
