English for Better Futures: Erik and Alejandra
Organized by: Rachael Greco
Our goal is to raise $2,900 so that Erik and Alejandra can finish their English studies at an advanced level of proficiency.
Erik, 16 years old, and Alejandra, 13 years old, are not your average adolescents. Every day after waking up at 5:30 AM, both students are expected to help around their houses with the cooking, daily chores, and taking care of their younger siblings. They spend the rest of their mornings doing homework before they pack up for school where they study from 1:00 to 6:00. When they get home in the evening, they help make dinner and continue doing homework until bedtime.
Unfortunately, this disciplined lifestyle isn't enough for them to be able to make better lives for themselves. In order to do so, they must combine their hard work with something that will set them apart.
Why is English important?
The economy in Antigua, Guatemala, located 30 minutes from their village, is driven by tourism. The numerous hotels, restaurants, and travel agencies located here offer well-paying, secure employment opportunities to those who can speak English.
Before starting English classes last year, neither Erik nor Alejandra spoke a word of English. They've come a long way and with your help, can make it even further. Being able to speak English will allow them access to good opportunities in their futures and the ability to make a difference in both their families and their community.
It will change their lives.
The English program that Erik and Alejandra will study at will take them from basic to advanced in two years. They will attend classes from Monday to Friday and will be constantly evaluated to ensure their progress.
Breakdown of Monthly Costs (per student):
- Tuition: $35
- Books: $8.50
- Transportation: $17
- MONTHLY TOTAL = $60.50
- PROGRAM TOTAL = $1,450
100% of the proceeds will go towards supporting Erik and Alejandra's English education. Please check back for updates on both the fundraiser and the students' progress.
Thank you for contributing to Erik and Alejandra's dream of having better futures.
