BENEFITING: EPIC ACADEMY
Fact: 80% of students enroll as freshmen at EPIC reading below grade level, 25% of entering 9th graders read at or below a 4th grade level. Maria (pictured left) entered EPIC reading on a 4th grade level.
We Know: Without a foundation in reading, high school students will not succeed in high school coursework, let alone college.
What EPIC Does: Students, like Maria, who enter freshmen year reading more than 2 years below grade level are enrolled in a daily 45 minute reading intervention class in addition to the 80 minute reading course every 9th grader takes. Each reading intervention class is staffed with two highly trained reading teachers and provides intense, individualized literacy instruction.
Results: After two years in the reading program, 75% of students exit and are reading above, on, or very near grade level. Maria is now in 11th grade and reading at a 12th grade level - ready for college. In her words: “I remember my freshmen year. I struggled a lot with reading. I didn’t know how to write a paragraph. My teachers pushed me. I was going to go to another high school, but I don’t think I would have had the support I have at EPIC. Teachers here push you to succeed.”
Your Support: Would you consider supporting the incredible work that fueled Maria's and many other students' success by investing at a level you would consider generous?
On behalf of our students and staff, I thank you and wish you a happy holiday season,
