As many of you know my youngest nephew Cayden was diagnosed with Epilepsy in 2014. Before his diagnosis I honestly new very little about the disease and the actual toll it takes on an individual. As I've educated myself over the past year and half I've realized how little the general population knows about Epilepsy and how serious and debilitating the disease can be. Cayden is an incredibly resilient little guy considering he has to deal with multiple (sometimes upward of 10) seizures a day. But, this is not only affecting Cayden's life. My brother Rich, sister-in-law Leslie, and nephew Jonah also have to deal with repurcussions of this disease on a daily basis. Here are a few statistics from the Epilepsy foundation outlining just how widespread the disease is:
65 MILLION: Number of people around the world who have epilepsy.
OVER 2 MILLION: Number of people in the United States who have epilepsy.
1 IN 26 people in the United States will develop epilepsy at some point in their lifetime.
BETWEEN 4 AND 10 OUT OF 1,000: Number of people on earth who live with active seizures at any one time.
150,000: Number of new cases of epilepsy in the United States each year
ONE-THIRD: Number of people with epilepsy who live with uncontrollable seizures because no available treatment works for them.
6 OUT OF 10: Number of people with epilepsy where the cause is unknown.
I am running the United Airlines NYC Half marathon in support of the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York. This organization specializes in both raising public awareness about epilepsy and providing personalized services and supports to those affected by seizures. They educate the public about the need to accelerate research, so that better treatments are available and a cure is reached. They reassure individuals living with epilepsy that they are not alone and help caregivers learn more about supports, programs and therapies. For more information please visit WWW.EFMNY.ORG
Please donate as little or as much as you are able to so that I can reach my goal of raising $1,500 for the EFNMY.
