As a physician - I always thought I understood Epilepsy. I understood the different seizure types. I understood the medications and their side effects. What I didn't understand was the impact that Epilepsy has on those that suffer from it. That changed when my beautiful and healthy daughter, Nora, suffered her first grand mal seizure at the age of 5. My life and views on everything changed that day.
I now know that 1 in 100 children will suffer from Epilepsy. I now know that 20% of persons with Epilepsy never gain adequate seizure control. TWENTY PERCENT. I now know that Epilepsy impacts more than just those persons that carry the diagnosis - it affects families, loved ones and entire communities. I now know that there remains a stigma to Epilepsy. I now know that despite the fact that 1 in 10 persons will suffer a seizure at some time during their lifetime, few people know how to respond to a seizure.
So, I am running to raise money to support educational efforts and awareness by the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York (the Epilepsy Institute). This will be my first marathon. Join me in my efforts to bring much needed attention to the disease and follow my training progress!

Epilepsy Road Warriors - Why We Run
We're a team of people whose lives have been impacted by epilepsy. Some of us live with seizures. Some of us are running for loved ones. The fact is we are ALL part of the epilepsy community, because 1 out of every 26 people in the United States will develop a seizure disorder in their lifetime. That means that you or someone you know is already affected. So, join us and make your donation today. Together, we can empower individuals and families to live life to fullest with their seizure disorders while we strive for a cure.
The Epilepsy Road Warriors are part of November's National Epilepsy Month. All proceeds will go to raising epilepsy awareness and providing public education throughout New York City and the metropolitan area. All progams provided by the Epilepsy Institute which does business as the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York (EFMNY).
