BENEFITING: Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York
ORGANIZER: Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York
I am excited to be running the NYC Marathon as part of the Epilepsy Road Warriors and honored to represent Team Elizabeth. Elizabeth is the beautiful girl in the picture. She is a spirited 3.5-year old who communicates clearly with her expressive eyes, face, gestures, and several words.
Since she was 5.5 months old, Elizabeth has had intractable left temporal lobe complex partial seizures with rapid secondary generalization. When she has seizures, they multiply quickly and become sub-clinical. The sweet girl has had several major hospitalizations due to epilepsy in her life. At 18 months old, she was diagnosed with numerous sleep disorders, and she takes medication to regulate her sleep. Since she was little, Elizabeth has been receiving speech and cognition therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.
Elizabeth is currently home and in good spirits after spending 16 days in the hospital recovering from 2 neurosurgeries. She is scheduled for epilepsy surgery in November. The surgery will hopefully increase seizure control and improve her overall quality of life and development.
Despite her challenges, Elizabeth is a happy, fun loving, and thrill seeking little girl.
She enjoys school, music, instruments, the outdoors, slides, eating her favorite foods, Elmo, running, bouncing, and her little brother, John. She is an inspiration and hero to her family...and someone that I've thought of a lot as I've logged long runs in preparation for the marathon.
The Epilepsy Road Warriors run for the New York Metro Area's epilepsy community. We represent a community of individuals and families affected by epilepsy, healthcare providers, advocates and industry partners. Together we'll go the distance until there is a cure.
The 2012 Epilpesy Road Warriors were presented with the Mets Spirit Award at the 1st Annual Epilepsy Awareenss Day at Citi Field on July 22nd. This will be the second year that the Warriors will take to the streets to raise funds to support our Into the Light Programs for epilepsy awareness, education and empowerment.
