Our Mission

The Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan leads the fight to stop seizures, find a cure and overcome challenges created by epilepsy.

Who we are

Established in 1948, the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan is the only statewide non-profit organization focusing on epilepsy and an independently incorporated affiliate of the Epilepsy Foundation.  It is our goal to:

  • Close the treatment gap between what is being done for people with epilepsy and what should be done.
  • Improve how people with epilepsy are perceived, accepted, and valued in society.
  • Ensure that people with epilepsy and their families have access to full life experiences.

What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is the general term for a variety of neurological conditions characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures. A seizure is a brief disturbance in the electrical activity of the brain that causes temporary changes in movement, awareness, feelings, behavior, or other bodily functions. Up to thirty million Americans (one in every ten) have had, or will have, at least one seizure at some time in their lives. The Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan estimates that more than 100,000 people in the state and over 3 million people nationally have epilepsy. In addition, a large number of adults and children have undetected or untreated epilepsy.

What we do…we change lives

Through our programs and services, we…

Help individuals and families to manage epilepsy and its consequences.

  • This includes individualized Education & Consultation on our Here for You Helpline, the annual Wellness & Epilepsy Conference, monthly Learn & Share Conference Calls, epilepsy self-management programs, support for research, Camp Discovery, and a variety of social programs.

Make the community easier for people with epilepsy to live in.

  • This includes Public Policy Advocacy efforts and Seizure Recognition & First Aid Training for schools, first responders, senior-serving organizations, and other public and professional audiences.

Why support us?

It is only through public support that we can continue to be here for people and families affected by epilepsy.

Financial support from the public allows us to:

  • Assist people with epilepsy in leading productive lives and properly managing their condition
  • Combat the negative stigma commonly associated with epilepsy and seizures
  • Through our highly trained and experienced staff and collaborative relationships with the state’s leading medical experts in epilepsy, we provide in-depth information that is reliable, current, and easy to understand.
  • In the past, we have been recipients of substantial United Way funding; that is no longer the case.
  • We feel it is our obligation to keep our administrative costs as low as possible. We are proud to state that out of every dollar raised, $.87 goes back out into the community to do our mission.
  • KEY POINT: We must be here in order to change lives and attitudes regarding epilepsy, and we rely on fundraising from the public to make that happen.

Interesting Facts:

FACT: 1 in 26 people will get diagnosed with epilepsy.

FACT: Epilepsy is greater in prevalence than cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease combined.

FACT: Anyone can develop epilepsy at any time.
